Binaural beats vs isochronic tones
What's the difference, and which should I use?
Both aim at presenting a rhythm at a chosen frequency. They go about it in opposite ways, and the practical difference decides which one suits your situation.
Binaural beats
Two continuous tones, one per ear, a few Hz apart. The rhythm is not in the audio — you perceive it from the difference between the channels. Requires headphones. The result is smooth and easy to ignore, which is why it suits sleep and long sessions.
Isochronic tones
A single tone switched on and off at a set rate. The rhythm is physically present in the file, so it survives speakers, a single earbud and mono playback. It is also far more noticeable — a distinct pulsing — which some people find focusing and others find intrusive.

Which to choose
If you are wearing headphones and want something you can forget about — sleep, a long work block, winding down — binaural is the better fit. If you cannot wear headphones, or you want the rhythm to stay noticeable, isochronic is the one that still functions. Neither has decisively better evidence; the research on both is limited, and choosing between them is mostly about your situation and what you can tolerate for an hour.
